For centuries, honey has been used as medicine.
It is one of nature’s incredible gifts which has many healing properties we should all know about.
First of all, it is important to note that honey is highly refined by the bees and is calorie dense, sweet and will go directly to the bloodstream quickly. However, due to its mineral and enzyme content, it does not disrupt the natural mineral balance of the body as much as regular sugar will. In addition to this, honey works to harmonize the liver, neutralises toxins, relieves pain and contains powerful antitoxic, antiseptic and antibacterial constituents which have a wide range of benefits
when ingested or applied topically.
One of the most renown benefits of honey is for the treatment of a sore throat and upper respiratory infections. Many people will use honey frequently in their home remedies to treat coughs and colds and this has proven to be more effective than common treatments such as antihistamines, cough syrup and pain killers. A study performed by Oxford University, involving 1761 participants of all ages looked at a comparison of common treatments with taking honey and preparations that included it as an ingredient. The results indicated that honey was more effective than usual care for symptomatic relief, particularly reducing the severity and frequency of coughing. Results also concluded that the time frame of symptoms
were reduced by a day or two with the treatment of honey.
Studies on the effectiveness of honey to treat the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections have also proven to be a great alternative to antibiotics. The results of one study conducted by BMJ Evidence Based Research concluded that honey can be more effective and less harmful than the usual alternatives, further avoiding antimicrobial resistance. Honey can be considered a natural antibiotic which can be attributed to the hydrogen peroxide content. Bacteria cannot survive in honey due to its low water content and the presence of glucose oxidase which breaks down glucose sugars in the curing process.
This is how it is effective on resistant bacterial species such as Staphylococcus aureus.
Many people may not know that honey is an ancient remedy which has been used for the treatment of infected wounds and is gaining acceptance as an effective agent for ulcers, bed sores and skin infections from burns and wounds. Aristotle makes mention of different types of honey, and refers to a specifically ‘pale honey’ as being a good salve for wounds and sore eyes. The healing properties can be attributed to the antibacterial activity, the moist environment it creates as well as
the high viscosity of the honey which provides a protective barrier to prevent further infection.
These properties can also promote the growth of new tissue, accelerating the healing process.
In addition to the incredible wound healing, antimicrobial and antiseptic benefits of honey, it is also great to mention the vitamin and nutrient profile. Over the years, researchers have revealed that honey contains a range of B vitamins including niacin and riboflavin, vitamin c, magnesium, selenium, zinc, iron, calcium, potassium and more! Honey also contains pre and probiotics and research has linked this incredible substance to the improvement of gut microbial balance.
Our new Eucalyptus Melliodora honey is derived from a Eucalyptus tree that many consider to be the best honey-producing eucalyptus in Australia, and is one of the great honey-producing trees of the world. It has a light amber colour, superior flavour and slow granulating properties meaning it does not crystallise easily as some types of honey. This honey has a low Glycaemic Index (GI) of 31-39 and Insulin Index of 25-45 due to its high fructose content. This makes it an excellent sweetener for diabetics and a great energy source for athletes. Raw eucalyptus varieties of honey are particularly thought to have high levels of antiseptic properties. Therefore, making it a powerful wound healer as well as being an excellent natural remedy for coughs, sore throats and respiratory ailments.
This honey has been specifically chosen to complement our Jade Palace ‘Immune Enhancing’ tea formula. Adding this to your tea will not only give it a beautiful and soothing flavour, it enhances the immune benefits, too.
